It’s Time to Fuel the Builders: The Spark Angels Manifesto
By: Aaron Favreau, Executive Director of Spark Angels
A few years ago, Marc Andreessen wrote a defining essay titled “It’s Time to Build.” It was a rallying cry for the technology sector to stop managing decline and start creating the future.
He was right. But building requires more than just grit; it requires fuel. It requires capital.
We are living through a renaissance of creation. With the explosion of AI-enabled tools, the cost of building has plummeted. It is faster, cheaper, and easier to build software and launch products today than at any point in history. The barrier to entry has lowered, but the barrier to scale remains.
This new wave of founders is building the future of healthcare, energy, logistics, and productivity. But in the earliest stages—Pre-Seed and Seed—there is a gap. Especially right here in Arizona.
That is why we launched Spark Angels. We will invest in the future being built here in Arizona and across the country.
The Arizona Paradox
I look around our state and I see two distinct groups that should be talking to each other, but aren't.
On one side, we have a surging crop of startup founders. They are gritty, they are innovative, and they are hungry.
On the other side, we have an incredible density of talent and wealth. Arizona is home to seasoned executives, exited founders, and industry leaders who have the capital to invest and the experience to guide young companies.
But there is a disconnect.
We have a massive untapped resource of potential angel investors who simply haven't been activated. They have the capacity to be world-class angels, but they lack the connection to the startup ecosystem. No one has engaged them. No one has shown them the roadmap.
Energizing the Asset Class
Spark Angels is not just a syndicate; it is an activation engine.
We believe that angel investing shouldn't be a black box reserved for a secret club. It should be a dynamic, growing asset class that drives real returns while supporting the local economy.
We are here to fill the gap by doing three things:
Activating New Capital: We are bringing new investors to the table. We are providing the educational resources, coaching, and workshops needed to take someone from "curious executive" to "confident angel investor."
Bridging the Gap: We are connecting the wisdom of experienced leaders with the energy of new founders.
Supercharging the Ecosystem: We want Arizona to be a top-tier hub for early-stage tech. To do that, we need liquidity, velocity, and a community that supports risk-taking.
Why Now?
Because the opportunity cost of sitting on the sidelines is too high.
Investing in startups is risky, yes. But it is also the only asset class where you can directly influence the outcome. When you back a founder, you aren't just buying equity; you are buying a front-row seat to the future. You are helping build the technology that will define the next decade. This doesn't have to be overly time consuming for the angel investor either. Guidance can simply be hopping on a call with a founder.
We are optimistic about the future. We believe that technology creates abundance. And we believe that Arizona has the potential to be a powerhouse of innovation—if we support it.
